This is no ordinary Auchroisk - whileĀ this workhorse distillery generally puts out good but unremarkable Speyside single malt for owner Diageo's blended whiskies, this particular 21-year-old Auchroisk has been given the Darkness treatment, whereby each of their releases has a brief secondary maturation in Octave casks.
Octaves are made by breaking down a sherry butt (in this case of the Moscatel variety)Ā and recoopering it into eight smaller barrels. For this Auchroisk, the Moscatel will have added rich, sweet, nutty and dried fruit flavours to Auchroisk's natural grassy, maltiness.
