Hakushu's whisky was just getting into its stride on this side of the world back in the early 2010s when the Japanese whisky drought set in and the distillery's 12-year-old promptly disappeared fromĀ European shelves - a tragedy as Hakushu's reputation and recognition were skyrocketing with western whisky fans at the time.
Tasting this fantasticĀ Japanese single malt whisky today, one can only marvel at the clarity of the delicious grassy, meadowy, lightly peated honeyed exotic fruit flavours - each precisely delineated but beautifully integrated into a complex, dangerously moreish palate.
The return of Hakushu 12-year-old to our shelves, however briefly, is a great moment, and fingers crossed this will be a much more readily available dram in the near future. A quintessential Japanese single malt, Hakushu 12-year-old remains a buy-on-sight whisky.
